Dr. Jose Carvalho

  • Graduated from University of Sao Paulo Medical School in 1977.
  • Completed Residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Sao Paulo in 1982.
  • Completed a Master’s in Pharmacology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Sao Paulo in 1984.
  • Completed a PhD in Pharmacology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Sao Paulo in 1989.
  • Served in different capacities at the Department of Anesthesia, University of Sao Paulo until 2002.
  • Relocated to the University of Toronto in 2003 as Associate Professor of Anesthesia, University of Toronto and Director of Obstetric Anesthesia at Mount Sinai Hospital
  • Cross appointed as Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Toronto, in 2004. 
  • Promoted to Full Professor of Anesthesia and Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Toronto, in 2010.
  • Main areas of research include: use of ultrasound in obstetric anesthesia; uterotonics and postpartum hemorrhage; labor analgesia; postpartum pain management; management of high risk obstetric women, particularly preeclampsia, cardiac disease, neurologic conditions and obesity; complications in obstetric anesthesia; quality improvement, interprofessional education.
